Is Marijuana Legal in Fort Collins?
Colorado has had legalized recreational marijuana and medical marijuana for longer than most states. The laws have shifted and changed over the years a bit, but they remain relatively the same. The law for recreational use doesn’t even discriminate between residents and visitors to the state—with the disclaimer, of course, that taking any marijuana purchased in Colorado out of the state constitutes a federal crime because marijuana is still illegal at the federal level.
If you’re in town visiting family or have come to Colorado on vacation, you can partake in recreational marijuana consumption during your time, but you can’t take it with you when you leave.
As far as medical use goes, Colorado does not offer reciprocity with other states’ medical patients. This is likely because they have recreational marijuana available. It eliminates the need to track patient purchases or sync information with their home state’s system, and still allows people over the age of 21 access to several different types of weed and marijuana products while they’re in Fort Collins.
Do You Need a Colorado Medical Marijuana Card?
The Colorado Medical Marijuana Registry is a state-run program that allows qualified patients to legally access and use medical marijuana for medicinal purposes. Established in 2001 with the passage of Amendment 20, this registry is overseen by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE). To join the registry, individuals must be Colorado residents with a qualifying medical condition, such as cancer, epilepsy, chronic pain, or PTSD, among others.
Once registered, patients receive a Medical Marijuana Card, which permits them to purchase and possess a limited amount of marijuana from state-licensed dispensaries. This program has provided patients with a legal avenue to manage their medical conditions with marijuana, offering them relief from symptoms and improving their overall quality of life.
Does Fort Collins Have Medical Marijuana?
Even though Colorado has legalized recreational marijuana use, medical marijuana in Fort Collins is still popular. According to the laws, those with a medical card are able to purchase up to two ounces of flower or eight grams of concentrated marijuana products daily. Although these newer laws are stricter than before, they still allow a lot more in terms of a purchase limit than many states. For example, in a 30-day period in Missouri, people can purchase up to four ounces total (or 32 grams of concentrate), which equates to about 1/3 of an ounce a day or a gram of concentrate.
Medical marijuana cards in Colorado can be issued for a variety of conditions, including but not limited to:
- Conditions with persistent muscle spasms
- Cancer
- Glaucoma
- HIV/AIDS
- Cachexia
- Severe nausea
- Severe pain
- Seizures and epilepsy
- Terminal conditions
- Other conditions as approved by the Colorado Board of Health
Basically, if a doctor in the state feels that medical marijuana would be the best option for treating a condition or its symptoms, it can be considered for medical legalization, but a special request will have to be made. Those who cannot get a medical marijuana card will have to buy recreational marijuana and pay the higher sales tax associated with it.
And as a reminder, out-of-state patients will not qualify to purchase medical weed in Fort Collins. They’ll have to visit a recreational store.
Does Fort Collins Have Recreational Marijuana?
Fort Collins recreational marijuana is available, thanks to Colorado making recreational weed legal all the way back in 2012. This has been a huge beacon of travel for the state, as well as a reason for relocation for many. The income tax charged on recreational marijuana is much higher than that of medical products and the prices might be a bit higher, too. Recreational users may not have access to the high-quality medical-grade cannabis products being sold in the state, but they will still have access to a lot of great marijuana.
Fort Collins and the surrounding area are filled with dispensaries and retail stores selling a variety of marijuana products. Some sell both medical and recreational marijuana in one dispensary while others are specifically for one type of use or the other.
